You may have heard the saying that if you do the same thing as everyone else, you’ll get the same results as everyone else does. So how can you position your brand to be heard in a sea of noise in this digital world?

I get asked this question regularly in many different forms. 

“How can I stand out from my competition?” or “How can I differentiate my brand?” or my favorite “How can I get more people to listen to me?” 

 

Standing Out Versus Connecting

When you compare your brand against your competition, you’re often coming from a mindset of lack and fear. The fear that there aren’t enough clients, or that your competition will take your current clients from you. 

If you provide a product or service that you’re truly proud of, one that you trust, AND one that your clients actually want and can afford, try this little mindset hack. 

Instead of worrying about what your competition is doing, try looking for more ways to connect at a deeper level with your potential clients. 

 

Connection Over Competition 

Rather than trying to duplicate what your competition is doing, look for gaps in what they offer to your audience. For example, if you are a health coach and your competition is trying to appeal to all ages, perhaps you can focus only on clients with young children. 

When you focus on connecting with your audience at a deeper level, they’ll feel a connection with you. Imagine how much more more value a health coach could provide to a mother with young kids if that was the primary focus. Your language, marketing messages, photos, could all be tailored around your specific audience segment. 

 

Summary

Competition comes from a mindset of always looking over your shoulder to see what your competition is doing. 

Connection comes from a mindset of always looking forward in anticipation of meeting your clients needs with tremendous value.
